Maestro Perkins conducts again! Tex Perkins has fired the first shot of the closest thing to a Gracelands High School reunion with The Bumhead Orchestra appearing at the Lillyworld stage on this years Big Day Out. For those unaware of the concept of The Bumhead Orchestra is a conductor (Maestro Perkins) directs a group of people to improvise with instruments they're not familiar with playing. Knowing that this may trigger off a search engine frenzy, I thought I would complete all the dirty work for you. If you're going to the BDO this year and your able to get footage or stills of this event please contact us. If you know who is appearing in The Bumhead Orchestra please email or post comments. I know that Adrian Hornblower (No More Bandicoots) & Susie Beauchamp (Box The Jesuit) are appearing.
Opening remarks and brief mention of The Bumhead Orchestra.
Quote from ex Lubricated Goat bassist Guy Madison now in Mudhoney
"...Bumhead Orchestra was something that Tex acted as the conductor of they were various members of the band that played ridiculous instruments and what would happen was Tex would point at you and you’d be expected to make your particular noise. There was a very famous chap who I only knew as Fishpump and only went by the name Fishpump. We was a weird little guy with a Mohawk that I’d seen around town for years and everyone knew him as fishpump and that was his instrument in the Bumhead Orchestra was a fishpump from an aquarium set that he would blow into and make a noise out of" Guy Madison Mudhoney 2003

...were the best thing I saw at Melbourne BDO. They were almost like HVlll except they didn't scream "HATE!" at the end of each track.
Too many faces in the band to remember, but I'll try:
Tex - conductor
Helen Cattanach - accordian
Pete Lawler - trumpet
Charlie Owen - clarinet
Adalita - toy glockenspiel
Raul - kazoo
Joel Silbersher - violin
Susie Beachamp - violin
Spencer P - ahh I forget....
Jim White .... etc etc etc etc
about twenty folks onstage though making a racket. .
Also spotted in the Bumhead Orchestra's Melbourne performance:
Brian Hooper - bass
Tony Pola - drums
Mick Harvey - small melodeon
Spencer Jones played trumpet. Other instruments included bazouki, keyboards, another violin, whistle, triangle, 2 tubas, another drum, another melodeon...
Amongst other things, they played the theme to Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and the Baby Elephant Walk.
They were AMAZING and if you're after pics/footage, maybe get in touch with Channel V because there was a bloke there with their signage on his shirt and a video camera!
and I daresay if they have crowd shots you'll see me in bucket hat and "YOU ARE" t-shirt pissing myself laughing for the whole set. heheheheh.
Here's a clip i filmed at the Melbourne BDO...
