Goat regulars Stu Spasm (Guitar/Vocals), and Guy Maddison (Bass), were joined by James Baker (Beasts of Bourbon) on Drums, Patrick Kavanagh of Box The Jesuit on Guitar, and Adrian of No More Bandicoots on Sax.

Formed in Sydney 1983 by a group of friends drawn together to create a band that integrated elements of visual art including film, into music performance. Preceeding Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk, Mark (vocal) had written and performed with the band Du Dux Dan. Adrian (saxophone), Yvette (drums) and Tom (guitar) with Real Fucking Idiots, and Chip (bass guitar) with Anti Hierarchy. Real Fucking Idiots and Anti Hierarchy performed together on occasion and realised a potential for the combination of the two. In 1982 Tom and Amanda (RFI) formed the band What with Dean, Owie and Tony (AH), performing until Amandas death late in that year. Dean and Owie then formed Itchy Rat and Tony joined Soggy Porridge. RFI were a riot of intense no-wave art punk. Anti Hierarchy created an urgent punk music inspired by English anarcho punks Crass, Discharge and Disorder. Du Dux Dan were most reflective of the post punk genre, melodic and quirky. The combination of these three was always going to create something interesting. Adrian and Chip were (and still are) likely to infuse any of their music projects with elements of visual art, so Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk became a vehicle for film making and mash ups, screen printed posters, murals, painted clothes and photography. Some of this material is preserved in a collection of Super 8 films with accompanying soundtracks. Sydney had a thriving and well documented alternative music scene in the 70’s and 80’s. A search for the book Inner City Sounds is a good start. The city and innermost suburbs were riddled with small independent venues, which started to be closed down from as early as 82. It was an incredibly creative period and a fortunate time to develop as a musician/artist. The punk community had many factions and centered in venues from the Cross and Darlinghurst, over to Millers Point and around to Surrey Hills and Redfern. The CBD itself was a great hangout. Sydney at this time attracted artists and audiences from other cities, drawn to the swelling numbers in the sub cultures, gangs with distinct styles of dress and music that evolved over time. The art punk scene was already well established but seemed to go through a burst from 82 until the late 80’s. Bands formed, merged, fell apart, people died, went crazy, reemerged, escaped……. The earlier bands gave way to an invigorated new no wave sound and a label: Black Eye (of Red Eye). Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk were recorded by Adrian on his Tascam 4 track quite well, and quite badly live on cassette walkmans. Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk dissolved in 1985, unfortunately too early. Adrian and Mark moved onto No More Bandicoots (Black Eye), Tom to Feedtime (Aberrant) and Chip to Psilicybin. Taken from vimeo.com

Lubricated Goat: a very exclusive moment

Screen Hub Thursday 10 December, 2009 It is very rare to see a film which you know for sure will only be seen once in public. This is your chance, and it involves nudity, Andrew Denton, and a concession from the ABC. The documentary is called In the Raw, directed by Cousin Creep and produced by Jannine Barnes. The occasion is the 19th Meredith Music Festival. The event will occur on December 11th, at the Outlands Ecoplex Cinema, at 10pm. In the Raw, described by Jannine Barnes as "basically a moment of love and celebration for Andrew Denton and the ABC", is about the notorious moment in November 1988 when guitar band Lubricated Goat performed on Andrew Denton's Blah Blah Blah absolutely, totally and completely IN THE NUDDIE! It was the first time that male nudity had been broadcast on Australian television, proving that we do have testicles, and suggesting that we procreate in the normal way. This caused a sensation. Politicians, ABC management and shock jocks all became involved. Cousin Creep, a stalwart of Melbourne’s 3RRR with his Saturday night show “Paint the Town Clear Gloss”, and “The Breakfasters”, interviewed the group for a cassette fanzine, Aliens Mutants, and heard their side of the story. Not only had the Blah Blah Blah crew known this was going to happen, they also confused the Goat band with No More Bandicoots, an outfit that regularly forgot its trousers before performing. Creep went on to run an indie record label, Hippy Knight Records, suck up the magic of the internet, and move to Bakersfield, California, where he now produces political and themed podcasts. He continues to support the music of bands with names like Feedtime, Thug, King Snake Roost and Bloodloss. But he never forgot that faded frenzy, and started to work on the film in 2002 with Jannie Barnes. Shot around the world, it cost a few thousand in cash, and was a labour of love and high good humour. That joy was a bit strained when Barnes attempted to negotiate the rights to the three and a half minutes of goosefleshed glory which Auntie has cleverly kept. The cost was $40/second. For festival release, a flat fee of $3500. Not the kind of money you earn as an independent producer, or indeed as a rock and roll tragic haranguing the world from the home of California Country music. The ABC has agreed to allow one single public screening for no fee. Hence, the audience at Meredith will be privileged to participate in a moment of history, much like that original audience for Blah Blah Blah, some of whom probably still mourn the terrible time when lead singer Stu Spasm was stabbed in Berlin. Here is one review of the band, from Trouserpress: "Some of the crudest sounds from Australia's belly were belched up by Lubricated Goat, a band which originally featured two former members of Salamander Jim. Since getting underway in early '86, Goatees have slipped in and out and back in again, though the groans, gristle and guttural grunts of Stu Spasm (as well as the backdrop of bleating horns and discordant guitars) have held steady." He survived, as did the clip, which has somehow found its way onto YouTube - without the involvement of Barnes and Creep: I have seen In the Raw. It is funny and illuminating. Since the interviewees say so firmly that the ABC will never, ever run another nude band, perhaps the ABC could run the documentary, and then do just that. In November 1988 Andrew Denton's BLAH BLAH BLAH program caused a nationwide stir by allowing guitar group LUBRICATED GOAT to perform on ABCTV completely naked. The resulting media frenzy jammed talk back lines as the public hotly debated this apparent decline in Australian media standards.

IN THE RAW dispels the myths which have arisen as a result of Lubricated Goat's nude appearance by exposing the politics, the censorship, and the nudity of this event through extensive interviews with the members of Lubricated Goat, with ABC Management and the Blah Blah Blah Production team.

Schadenfreude was Lubricated Goat's follow up to their 'Paddock of Love' LP released in 1989 on Black Eye / Amphetamine Reptile Records. The line up featured Gene Ravet (Space Juniors) on Drums, Charles Tolnay on Guitar (King Snake Roost), Guy Madison on Bass & Stu Spasm on Guitar. As this is difficult to locate, I decided to post it on here.

I think Shardenfrauder was recorded in strange state, after we knew that we had an American record deal and we needed to make a new record. We didn’t have enough material that’s why it’s only a six song EP, but we did take some time over it. I’d actually taken Stuart to see Metallica not long before we recorded that, and I think Stuart was impressed by the slick power of that band. I think we might have tried to do something slick, and metal as probably the Goat ever got.

A while back a certain chap requested the 1st feedtime LP to be uploaded on BERJBX. These tracks were bonus cuts on the Suction LP issued by Rough Trade in 1989. There was talk that Dropkick Records of Melbourne were releasing a feedtime anthology which is now a good 3 - 4 years in the making. feedtime are slowly turning into a "glimmer in the mind of those who remember them" type of band, time is ripe to unhurl onto you the debut feedtime LP from 1985. These tracks have been tweaked from the 1989 CD to bring them on par with the distorted MP3 you would expect from 2008.

UPDATE: Sub Pop will re-issue the feedtime / THE ABERRANT YEARS - SP980 in March 2012 - all feedtime mp3's have been removed including this LP

For a while Chris of Purple Vulture Shit relocated to Darwin and started up The Spring Rolls - One publicity stunt was establishing The Northern Territory Anti Nudist Association which attracted some local newspaper press (thanks to connections at the newspaper). The Spring Rolls also featured a song about NTANA titled 'No Nudes' taken from their cassette released through DNA Magazine. I've also enclosed a low quality footage of Toe in 2004 explaining the story behind NTANA.

Sympathy for the Record Industry & Sub Pop 7 inchs

In 1992 Lubricated Goat had two 7" appear on Sympathy for the Record Industry (SFTRI 194) & Sub Pop (SP193). All tracks were recorded with David Livingstone (God Bullies) and deemed as "A Death Jam "Wall of Pain" Sound Recording" (s). The sessions yielded two new recordings and re-recorded versions of 'Shut Your Mind' & 'Prayer for Blood' from the Schadenfreude EP. The line up for these sessions remains mysterious as no line up is credited on either singles and only a photo on the back cover of the SFTRI (showing Spasm, Renestair E.J, Lachlan McLeod and Martin Bland).

Bruce Griffiths spoke to Tex Perkins, Lachlan McLeod, Stu Spasm, Peter Read, Adrian and 'Big Tex' about the 'Waste Sausage" compilation, the LUBRICATED GOAT mini album, and the THUG Lp, with which they are all in some way connected.

Bruce Griffiths: Where is the BUSH OYSTERS thing from?

Lachlan McLeod: That was from the first ever BUSH OYSTERS show, at French's.

Tex Perkins: BUSH OYSTERS were a great band.

Peter Read: They were a very musical band.

Tex: BUSH OYSTERS came together when I came back from Adelaide. Me and Lachlan just went around and asked all these idiots if they wanted to do something and they said "Yes!" and it came together in about 2 weeks. Very easy, it came together so quickly.

Bruce Griffiths: Why did that stop?

Tex: That was my fault. I stayed in Adelaide, because of love.

Lachlan: It was also a good band to cut off fairly' quickly, even though I liked it. It could've continued, but the way it worked out was ok to me as well.

Adrian: It spawned a lot of other bands as well.

Lachlan: We played a couple of really dreadful shows with THE ANTI NOWHERE LEAGUE, which wasn't a good thing for us. BUSH OYSTERS weren't very compatible with ANL.

Adrian: That was the band I've felt the free-est playing in of any I've been in.

Peter: BUSH OYSTERS is possibly one of the only "rock" bands I've been in that I've thoroughly enjoyed. I miss it a lot.

Venom P Stinger began as Sick Things with various members also playing in Fungus Brains, The Moodists & eventually the Dirty 3. Venom P. Stinger went onto record for a number of labels including No Master's Voice (Meet My Friend Venom), Aberrant (Walking Around 7" / What's Yours Is Mine), Au-go-go (Waiting Room) & Siltbreeze (Tearbucketer). Sadly in October 2004 Venom p Stinger lead singer Dugald McKenzie (85-89) passed away from cancer. There is some talk that Scotti of Death Valley Records is planning a CD Venom P. Stinger anthology very soon. This track is taken from 'What's Yours Is Mine'.

King Snake Roost sprung from the ashes of Grong Grong and began with revolving line ups before settling with Peter Hill (Vocals), Charles Tolnay (Guitar), David Quinn (Bass) & Bill Bostle (Drums). They recorded three full length LP's 'From Barbarism to Christian Manhood', 'Things That Play Themselves' & 'Ground Into The Dirt' for Aberrant (Australia) Amphetamine Retail (USA). The band also had a hate/hate relationship with their home town of Adelaide which was very well documented in Harry Butler's DNA magazine. King Snake Roost wound up soon after their debut American tour which saw them record 'Ground Into The Dirt' with Butch Vig (pre Nevermind). This track is taken from 'Things That Play Themselves'.

As previously mentioned ... "Following a support to the Dead Kennedys, Grong Grong impressed Jello Biafra so much that he offered them a deal with Alternative Tentacles. The self titled EP featured one studio side and a live side recorded at the Seaview Ballroom in St-Kilda (Melbourne). Unfortunately, as luck would have it when the EP was released lead singer Michael was in a coma for a number of years following a drug overdose which put Grong Grong on hiatus. Amazingly he survived (although was forever paralyzed from the waist down) and years later went onto front HACK which featured members of members of Fear & Loathing. Guitarist Charles Tolnay went onto King Snake Roost, Lubricated Goat & Tumor Circus"...

It seems Reverberation Records of Australia is planning a Grong Grong CD anthology to be made up of the EP as well as live tracks from the Seaview Ballroom show. This recording was taken from a vinyl copy of the EP played on a new Nurmark PT-01 Turntable which was tranfered to Cool Edit Pro then ripped to MP3.

Bushpig was a project which was lead by Peter Hill of King Snake Roost that released a 7" EP on Amphetamine Retail (featuring members of King Snake Roost, No More Bandicoots & The Thrown Ups) and a self titled LP on his Hill's own 'PGK (Practical Goat Keeping)' label. It's also one of the rare moments Australian Grunge jammed with Seattle Grunge as the LP featured members of Bloodloss, King Snake Roost, Lubricated Goat, Mudhoney & Monroe's Fur. This was originally released back in 1990 with only 500 copies pressed on Yellow & Green vinyl. This item has been turning up lately on EBay and surprisingly is still very affordable considering how scare it was at the time & the line up involved.

Blabbermouth - BLOODLOSS Bloodloss (Mark I) formed in Sydney in 1982 with Ex Adelaide musicians Sharon Weatherill (Vocals), Renetsar RJ (Guitar), Jeremy Bender (Drums) & Duncan Coleman (Bass) between Oct - Dec 1982. According to Martin Bland, the band acquired a unwanted skinhead following which resulted in some violence at their shows. As a result, Bloodloss changed their name to Zulu Rattle which saw ex Head On members Jim Selene (bass) & Martin Bland on Drums join with Ex Exhibit-A Guitarist Stu Spasm. Around 1986 Bloodloss (Mark II) begins after Sharon & Renetsar return to Adelaide South Australia after an extended stay in the UK and in 1988 release a 9 track self titled cassette only effort (due to Greasy Pop release schedule the band opt for a cassette only release). The band then go through a change incorporating a 2 drummer line up with Martin Bland recording what later became 'Human Skin Suit' on Greasy Pop. Soon Sharon leaves the band leading to yet another line up shift with Martin Bland taking over the guitar vocals duties recording the self released 'Smell Machine' 7" & 1990's 'The Truth Is Marchin' In' LP for Aberrant. The band went onto complete some Melbourne / Adelaide shows and soon after Bloodloss is put on hiatus with Renestar & Martin joining Lubricated Goat on their USA/European tour. in 1991 Bloodloss (Mark III) continues in Seattle with Renestar & Martin teaming up with Mark Arm of Mudhoney releasing material on Sympathy For The Record Indusry, Au-go-go, In The Red & Reprise.

This was taken from a Vinyl copy of ‘Just Because You Can’t See It... Doesn’t Mean It Isn’t There...’ (thanks to Chris Beneke) transferred to minidisc, then to CD then ripped to MP3. I'm hoping someone will re-issue this CD on day or I can find a copy on EBAY.

This is the opening cut to the 'Suction' LP which was released worldwide on Rough Trade Records which made feedtime labelmates to The Smiths! This was feedtime's last LP in their original lineup before reforming a few years later recording the 'Billy' LP on Amphetamine Retail / Black Hole Recordings in the mid 90's.

Martin Bland's Randomized Control Trials

The concept for these songs was arrived at in 2002 and recording was finally completed in October 2005. The premise involved using the 'Shuffle' program on a group of compact disc players running simultaneously to produce unique arraignments of original music. All the pieces followed a few guidelines: The musicians should be recorded separately from one another with little or no prior idea of what other musicians had played. They would be given a loose theme to improvise on and a common rigid tempo to follow. These recordings (sometimes hours long) were transferred onto a computer and cut into short phrases and fragments. The best of these were selected to be burnt onto CDR's. Once all the music for a piece had been recorded, each instrument was assigned a CD player, of which there were up to six. The CD players were then played simultaneously with the 'Shuffle' program activated, thus producing a unique arrangement of the piece each time. Some of the voices were of a 'found' nature but none of the music was sampled from other sources. Martin Bland Seattle 2006

So who are some the musicians involved in Martin Bland's Randomized Control Trials project? Renestair EJ, Stu Spasm, Mark Arm, Tim Kerr & Martin himself plus many others. So far the project has had one live presentation (CD players in all) on Doug Haire's Sonarchy Radio show on Seattle's KEXP early January 2006. So you may ask "where can I buy this CD?" Well Martin had this to say about the process of completing each CD.... "The idea for the actual CD that I'm going to put out is that every CD will have different versions of the songs. It'll probably be around 200 CD's which means 1200 different versions of the six songs. I have madeabout 120 CD's so far but it is very time consuming- a couple of hours to make each CD. I think perhaps this is the first time something this stupid has been attempted since the late 19th centurywhen the Edison company used to make discs of current vaudeville stars and had yet to perfect the massproduction of records so the singers would sing the song 100's of times..." Taken from the 1989 debut LP 'NEW WORLD ORDER CATALOGUE' self released by Munroe's Fur (via Waterfront Records). This file was hosted on IUMA.com which I finally managed to download this after 20 attempts (IUMA have a zillion pop up which are riddled with adware/spyware and is hosted on a very unreliable server) and you can clearly hear it's a vinyl to MP3 transfer. If anyone has a copy of 'New World' they'd like to rip to CD for me I'd be very thankful for your input. This recording featured the original line up with Paul 'Ringo' Gill (Guitar), Guy Madison (Bass), Paul Kidney (Vocals) & Peter Hartley (Drums).

Bernard King - a man of style

Bernard King the camp 1970's Australian TV Chef was an adopted icon to the entire Black Eye/Gracelands era. His image appeared on Black Eye gig posters, handbills and even the cover of B-Side magazine with Stu Spasm. I just finished reading A Marvelous Party: The Life of Bernard King by author Stephanie Clifford-Smith and now feel inspired to post some tracks from Bernard's corny LP 'A Man of Style' except I don't have a copy of it. So if you have a copy or know someone that has a copy send us an MP3 so we can share it on this site.

This track is taken from the Leather Donut LP and was the last official release from Salamander Jim (recorded live). I also came across this quote from Mark Arm (Mudhoney) said about the origins of the word grunge from a May 2000 interview with muso journalist Everett True.

Everett True: "Wasn't grunge™ your fault?"

Mark Arm: Did you ever read that book by Clark Humphrey, Loser, about the Seattle music scene? In it, the writer has dug up some letter I wrote to a local fanzine, and in the litany of words I use to describe my band, one of the words is "grungy." Obviously, I didn't make that up. I got it from someone else. The term was already being thrown around in Australia in the mid-'80s to describe bands like King Snake Roost, the Scientists, Salamander Jim, and Beasts of Bourbon. In fact, Tex Perkins was crowned the High Priest of Grunge in some local magazine. If anybody said that to him then, he would beat the shit out of them. I guess the only difference was that in Seattle we kind of took to it.

Tex Perkins has fired the first shot of the closest thing to a Gracelands High School reunion with The Bumhead Orchestra appearing at the Lillyworld stage on this years Big Day Out. For those unaware of the concept of The Bumhead Orchestra is a conductor (Maestro Perkins) directs a group of people to improvise with instruments they're not familiar with playing. Knowing that this may trigger off a search engine frenzy, I thought I would complete all the dirty work for you. As mentioned on this post we requested anyone that had the old B-Side mag which featured the Black Eye Records ad to hopefully scan and post it to us. Well thanks to Skeleton Boy Ryan we now have the evidence. All we need now is a taped copy or a vinyl to CD transfer to place on this blog. According to Tex Perkins this Thug track was meant to be on Hairy Biscuit which was recorded when Thug went busking and were asked to "Move Along" by the police on this track 'The Good News & The Bad News".

There have been so many lineup and variations of Bloodloss that it seems almost near impossible to piece it all together. I am attempting to do a history on Bloodloss to finally set the record straight. Basically, Bloodloss were nomadically spread across Sydney, Adelaide before settling in Seattle. They have released material on Greasy Pop, Aberrant, SFTRI, Au-go-go, In The Red & Reprise. This track is taken from the 7" EP which preceeded The Truth Is Marching In LP recorded in October 1988. The line up was Martin Bland (Guitar/Vocals) Renestair EJ (Guitar), Chris Whiley (Bass) & Andrew Foley (Drums). The EP was self released 7" around 1988 and between 400-500 copies were pressed. This MP3 was originally lifted from a casette copy, yet Martin Bland has completed a vinyl to CD copy for us so we have replaced that tape hiss for vinyl clicks.

BOX THE JESUIT - Sniffing At The Tailpipes Of Hell

There is very limited information about Box The Jesuit on the Net. They were formed from the ashes of Sydney group Madroom and featured Goose & Susie Beauchamp. Their association with Black Eye was releasing the track 'Satan' on the Waste Sausage LP. They also played a few of the Black Eye Records showcases and were known to feature The Butchered Babies (more about them later) during some live performances. They released their debut EP Bloody Mary on Snoyd Records (released by then roadie Simon Grungehead financed via an inheritance) then later signed to Timberyard releasing Punch Out That Loony Sappy Tune & Murdercycle. They relased one final CD 'Guide Dogs For The Spiritually Impaired' on their own Kosmik Ganda label. Sadly Goose died on 1 August 1993 following a long battle with lymphomation after it's release. This track is taken from Murdercycle CD edition which was released via Normal (Europe).

Black Eye Records founder John Foy was also an accomplished graphic artist in his own right. His Skull Printworks designs were incredibly distinctive and defined the era perfectly. It is Foy's Black Eye series which are most striking using images such as Bernard King, Leather Men & Bud Spence which turned them absurdist Black Eye icons. The following is a edited transcript of an interview with John Foy early 2002.

Cousin Creep: Your original poster/artwork could you explain what set them apart from posters of the day?

JOHN FOY: It’s strange; poster art in general in Australia had a golden age. There were certainly posters around during the 60’s but they had a golden age in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Eighty percent of those posters being rock and or social issues seemed to come out of NSW. I don’t know why that is, because in particular Melbourne is clearly a more art based area. There was a Sydney phenomenon plus a south coast phenomenon where there were people like red back press. A lot of the political posters were highly detailed and colorful. And many of the rock ones were quite dull and I had the benefit of working in a screen printing factory which pre dated Mambo which was Phantom T-Shirts. Dare Jennings the propitiator was generous enough to nurture a few projects and develop a few skills after hours. We printed on fabric in day time and I printed on paper at night and I used the t-shirt inks to do it. This was something that everyone said you couldn’t do, but of course I did do it. I was just determined, there all sort of problems that are inherited to it but. So I ended up making all these really brightly colored posters without having to suffer all the damaging fumes because I was using water based inks. Because there weren’t so many bright colored posters in rock at that time I intended to have a profile and certainly other people followed.

Cousin Creep: A lot of the early posters if I could use the example of The Riptides posters using images from Apocalypse Now what was inspiring your work at that time?

JOHN FOY: Well back then you didn’t have the copyright nightmares that exist now and where everything is so controlled which is part of the heavily commercial world we live in. Back then you could behave like a cultural magpie and you could pick and choose images as you saw fit. It was all in the interpretation the origins of that sort of behavior go back to the 60’s San Francisco posters in particular where you take a collection of images and turn it into something else and that becomes your art. I mean it’s forgivable to a degree now, but back then it was a bit more novel. Back then I just took pop images that were equally popular as the people I was working for. In my view there were fewer images to choose from. Today there’s an overload of images, so it was easy to grab attention.

Cousin Creep: Getting back to the Black Eye posters. In terms of having that type of environment, how did that translate into your poster art at that time?

JOHN FOY: We had an old school house in Bullara is like a well to do suburb of Sydney Australia. And we had this tumbled down house at this probably rather despised buy all the other rather healthy inhabitants of Bullara. And the Red Eye/Black Eye office was a 2 room affair and the 2nd room was my screen printing studio. Right throughout this period I’d be stepping from this room to another. I would be running a record label one minuet and managing a band perhaps then stepping into my art environment and screen printing a poster. And through this environment all the various musicians would wander too and contribute in different ways. After the initial Black Eye poster the first designated Black Eye night that poster came solely from my mind. From there on in it was a shared exercise, most of the Black Eye posters from there on in for Black Eye nights were done jointly by Tex Perkins and me. Tex would provide maybe some doodles or image or lettering or some fonts. I would take those effectively as cut up jigsaw pieces and balance it out as I saw fit as a poster designer and then cut the colours in. Sometimes if I was really flat out label pressures or whatever Tex would actually assist with cutting some of the colours separations too. Certainly when it came to printing I’d be pulling the squeegee but other people would be hanging them up for me. Quite often Tex those posters looking back were some of the most satisfying posters I was involved with. The paring of collective minds plus the influence of the actual artists we were depicting added something totally different to anything else I had actually done.

Cousin Creep: You used images such as Bernard King, how did his inclusion as Black Eye Icon come about?

JOHN FOY: Bernard was just another one of those absurd icons. Primarily a lot of these icons were selected or driven by Lachlan. Lachlan would spend time going through flea markets or second hand shops just rooting out some incredibly absurd stuff. Junk… ah what’s the word I’m looking for… just flotsen and jetterson of days gone by. That would be forgotten if Lachlan hadn’t revived them. And I would put then in headlights or stage lights by putting them onto a poster. So there was a shared absurdist appreciation within all of us.

Now before you get excited and start collecting these lets just calm down for a moment. Only runs of 100 were made of each poster and currently the price to buy is $100 upwards. There are a few John Foy Poster being auctioned on Ebay from this seller.

To end the year I thought I'd post the ultimate Lubricated Goat track and the opening song to 'Paddock of Love' IN THE RAW!!! This track was the song which Lubricated Goat preformed on ABC TV's (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) show Blah Blah Blah in the nude. The incident created a national stir and is now the subject of a documentary (also called In The Raw) which is a prelude to the Black Eye Records/Aberrant story (Gracelands on Cleveland Street). Zulu Rattle were Stu Spasm (Salamander Jim / Lubricated Goat) on Guitar, RENESTAIR EJ (Bloodloss/Lubricated Goat) also on guitar, Martin Bland (Salamander Jim/Bloodloss/Lubricated Goat), Jim Selene (Falling Spikes/Primevils/Free Moving Curtis) on Bass & Sharon Weatherill AKA Zozzie Da Mozzie on Vocals. Originally Zulu Rattle were known as Bloodloss (one day I'll try and do a detailed story on them but until then) until they changed it to Zulu Rattle. Around 1984 they won a week of the Strawberry Hills Hotel Battle of the Bands contest. A compilation of this contest was released which features the only Zulu Rattle track committed to vinyl. A 7" EP was planned on G.R.E.E.N Records and material was recorded at Albert Studios (home of AC/DC/Ted Mulray Gang) with Tony Cohen. According to the legend they were in there after hours and perhaps unbeknown to the management of Alberts. It seems Stu Spasm threw a cigarette butt into a trash can which accidentally set off a small fire, which then triggered the overhead sprinkler system (which started to soak Alberts Studios and endanger all those precious AC/DC, Ted Mulray Gang & Angels master tapes). Needless to say, the tape for this session has either been lost or been scrubbed (prehaps as retribution for the incident) and only a casette dub from the sessions survived. Band members did later break into Alberts one night to find the tape in the tape library yet failed to locate it. This MP3 is taken from a 2nd generation cassette of the session and provides a interesting look at the early days of Spasm, Bland, EJ & Selene.

James Baker with The Victims (late 70's)

While James Baker shares a link with Black/Red Eye Records via his involvement with Beasts Of Bourbon, (early) Scientists & his first solo single (see this post) he was also a member of early Perth punk pioneers The Victims with Dave Faulkner from Hoodoo Gurus. Prior to The Victims, James was also in a short lived outfit called 'Geeks'. They may have gone down as a forgotten Perth punk yet recently on http://www.perthpunk.com a site run by ex Geeks member Ross Buncle has maintained that the material recorded by The Victims (on both their releases) as well as two tracks which appeared on the debut Scientists LP (Pink Album) were actually re-written 'Geeks' tracks which he has proved. While this was unbeknown at the time, subsequently both Kim Salmon & Dave Faulkner have now removed their names from the songwriting credits with APRA and now credit these to back to Buncle/Baker. Also of intrest are these original versions by The Geeks are now availible on CD from the Perth Punk site.

Hailing from the legendary household on Beulah Rd Norwood in Adelaide Purple Vulture Shit featured Chris Cashel (Toe) Big Tex (Tex Tunks) & Ewan Cameron (Egg'N'Brugers and also a famous artist now based in the Netherlands). They released one cassette on the DNA magazine tape label El Crapo (DNA Tape #4 PURPLE VULTURE SHIT / DISCIPLES OF JIM JONES) . Only one track made it to vinyl that being 'Ringworn' which was later issued on the Waste Sausage compilation on Black Eye Records.

'The World's Got Everything In It' was later re-recorded by Spencer for his solo LP which was on Red Eye Records as well as the The Beasts of Bourbon. While I hadn't planned on posting two Lubricated Goat tracks so close together I felt I needed to share this overlooked project which involved Lubricated Goat. The 2000 soundtrack to the 1997 film 'Love God' (KOCH Records) features a few tracks from the first Lubricated Goat EP 'Plays The Devil's Music' as well as some original score from Stu Spasm. I know very little about the film other then it was directed by Frank Grow and is categorized by IMDB.com as a comedy/horror. The CD can still be bought from AMAZON for a few bucks and is worth it for the 'Plays The Devil's Music' cuts which were left off the 'Schadenfreude' European CD release on Normal. This version of 'Somebody Today' differs from the 'Popular Male Vocalist' EP which was released on Australian Records.

MARTIN BLAND (Bloodloss/Lubricated Goat) on recording 'Goats & The Men Who Ride Them' “..Stuart (Spasm) had been to Perth and recorded a couple of songs there with I think Brett Ford and Peter Hartley. And he was on his way back to Sydney and he stopped in Adelaide and he stayed in my lounge room and he was there for a week. When you’re in Adelaide you can’t go out for amusement except for the pub and that gets a little boring. So just amuse ourselves I had a four track recorder a Tascam and a very good one. We just started trying to amuse ourselves by writing the most stupid songs that we could. Initially we started to try to write an album of stripper music. A couple of people we knew in Sydney were strippers and we thought it might be nice to have something to dance to. So ah we kind of wrote this, he tried to write an album of stripper music and we got four or five songs written, I think it was five recorded. Stuart took the tape away I didn’t know anything about that he even had a band called Lubricated Goat to be honest with you. I didn’t know this was going to be on an album we were trying to amuse ourselves. Then about a year later or something I get an album (Plays The Devil's Music EP) from Stuart that’s got me on one side with sort of stripper music….”

Following a support to the Dead Kennedys, Grong Grong impressed Jello Biafra so much that he offered them a deal with Alternative Tentacles. The self titled EP featured one studio side (recorded as part of winning a battle of the bands contest)and a live side recorded at the Seaview Ballroom in St-Kilda (Melbourne). Unfortunately, as luck would have it when the EP was released lead singer Michael was in a coma for a number of years following a drug overdose which put Grong Grong on hiatus. Amazingly he survived (although was forever paralyzed from the waist down) and years later went onto front HACK which featured members of members of Fear & Loathing. Guitarist Charles Tolnay went onto King Snake Roost, Lubricated Goat & Tumor Circus. This is taken from the DNA tape recorded live at The Berkley Hotel. 27/10/84 for the DNA Fanzine 5th birthday party.

In case your wondering what ever happened to RENESTAIR EJ ex Bloodloss / Lubricated Goat who returned to Australia from Seattle in early 2004 due to health issues. Well I yesterday received an email from a guy called Captian I who also included a MP3 titled 'Mummy' by PETERHEAD which feature RENESTAIR EJ on sax, Nathan Dale from Hack and Anton Becker from Meat who were both part of the Adelaide connection back in the late 80s/early 90s. This track was recorded in 2003 yet new material featuring EJ is expected soon and shall be posted on here soon.

THUG - Mechanical Ape/Proud Idiots Parade LP; Electric Wooly Mammoth LPSo far as the world of Australian absurdist noise goes, I doubt you could top these two LPs from the infamous Thug. I was lucky enough to be introduced to the world of Thug at the tender age of 15 when my older brother came home with their Fuck Your Dad 7" and a copy of the Waste Sausage compilation LP, though I'd be lying if I said they made any sense at the time. For the time being, I decided to stick to what I knew and understood: dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers punk rock. That moment of true understanding didn't arrive until roughly four years later when, with a wild thirst for ear-destroying noise, I finally purchased these two LPs for myself. A little background information is required here...Thug were the trio of Tex Perkins, Lachlan McLeod and Peter Read. Those who aren't aware of the music and antics of Thug usually snicker when I mention the first name listed there, since, perhaps unbenownst to international readers of this site, he's actually a fairly well-known "rock star" down under, and enjoyed massive success in the '90s with his band the Cruel Sea (and there's also Beasts of Bourbon, but you probably already know that). If there are any doubting Thomas' who poo-poo the possibility of Tex engaging in an exciting, hilarious and extremely fucked-up noise ensemble, I pull out these discs. The catch-phrase is thus: "It's the best thing Tex ever did", which I guess means nothing since I've never been a fan of anything else he's ever done, but you get the idea. When I bumped into him at a pub about 7 or 8 years back in Sydney (at a Jad Fair gig, no less) I uttered something along those lines to the man, and he was at least gracious enough to not punch me out on the spot. Nice guy.Thug were part of the notorious, drug-imbibing music scene of the mid/late '80s centred around the Black Eye label, the "experimental" imprint of the more straight-forward indie, Red Eye, and their catalogue of beautiful weirdness is something well worth investigating. Hyped up by the good people of B-Side 'zine at the time, most people's introduction to this world of sound was likely via the 1987 compilation, the previously mentioned Waste Sausage LP. With an abundance of toilet humour and nonsensical racket at their disposal, it - along with its sister release, Leather Donut - are classic documents of Australian perversity and good arguments for the continuing dole payments to creative layabouts nationwide. Never on CD, long deleted, you're not likely to find them in a secondhand bin near you any time soon, but if that moment occurs, you know what to do.Following the release of their controversial (well, duh!) 7", Fuck Your Dad (which, if I'm not mistaken, received some "straight" press at the time for its vulgarity), Thug spat out the Mechanical Ape/Proud Idiots Parade LP in '87. A truly messed up and wildly inventive mixture of lewd gags, extraneous noise, instrument abuse and a heavy dose of the Residents makes it a classic of the genre. If you've ever had your brain melted by the likes of the Los Angeles Free Music Society or the early Ralph Records stable, you need this sitting proudly in your collection. Stunning primitivist cover art, track upon track of ungodly filth, informative liner notes (sample: "Albert Camus's Underpants: I've been taking Vitamin B and the wounds around my anus are starting to heal. I was wearing Albert Camus's underpants", etc.) and a smorgasboard of ridiculous song titles which probably don't actually match up to any of the music, this is not only fucking ridiculous, but ridiculously good.Their sole follow-up, 1988's Electric Wooly Mammoth, is even better. Cleaner and more musical in approach - which really only means that the "songs" here amount to more than just screwing around in the studio whilst high on pills and other substances - ...Mammoth rates as an all-time Top 10 Australian Album for myself. It's an unbeatable hybrid of squalling noise, sublime acoustic guitar passages (actual tunes present), didgeridoo ragas, Residents-style electro pop, Chrome-ish sci-fi rock and the usual serving of primary-school humour. Note the stunning chorus to "Penis": "Penis penis penis, bosom bosom, arsehole". Housed in a typically ace full-colour sleeve and sporting a few nice black and white photos of our heroes inside, Electric Wooly Mammoth is a perfect package.What happened to Thug? Well, I distinctly remember Tex Perkins once saying in an interview that drugs had destroyed every single band he'd ever been in, so I can only assume that answers the question. With a scene as "intense" as the one surrounding and encompassing the band, such creative impulses can only last so long before people burn themselves out. Tex went onto bigger things (though he was also playing in the more high-profile Beasts Of Bourbon - who pre-date Thug by a few years - concurrently anyway), Lachlan McLeod messed around with Lubricated Goat for a few years and Peter Read remains, at least to me, a man of mystery. Life is full of regrets, but one which comes to mind right now is having never seen a Thug gig. OK, I was too young at the time anyway, but from all reports their live shows were a hilarious mixture of noise and stupidity, often resulting in the band simply getting naked, covering themselves in food and wrestling on stage. Now that's a show!Both of these LPs tragically suffered the worst reissue ever in the hands of the Grudge label - a completely useless "alternative" imprint of Universal - about 5 years ago. Without publicising it in any way - in fact, without telling anyone on earth of its existence - they were compiled onto one CD with the grammatically flawed title of Everything Is Beautiful In It's Own Way (sic), accompanied by dreadful cover art, no reproductions of the original and truly exceptional covers, no photos and little information as to who the hell Thug were. Why this CD exists as it does (or did: it's deleted) remains a mystery. The goddamn ninnies didn't even have the balls to print the full title of "Fuck Your Dad", instead listing it as simply "Dad". A pee-thetic legacy to a great band, I don't usually recommend such collector mentality, but I'll say this: search out the original LPs instead.lexdev@yahoo.com.au

Stu: CHICKEN HOLDER was a sophisticated nightclub act. When I was in Perth I was doing CHICKEN HOLDER in places as well. It's an exercise in how much you can get away with under the pretence of the performer (LAUGHTER). Me in this really disgusting outfit going around acting like some sort of sexy drag queen. Sort of like being Marlene Dietrich. You'd just go around and sit on people's laps and that, 'cept it's really unappealing having me come up and sitting on your lap (MUCH LAUGHTER) Instead of being nice to people, it's sort of like "terror crooning" - "oh dear, he's coming over here" - you'd go over and sit on their table and stroll back to the stage with one of their drinks and you'd squeeze their cheeks and slap 'em across the face and sit on their laps and put your arm around them. I know I wouldn't like someone to come up and do that if I was trying to watch a group.... There's instrumental tapes and this little box I've got that makes noises, called the Unit, and a mic, stand. I'd get a chicken from the supermarket and put it on the mic stand and attach the Unit to it, and then Brett who was playing in LUBRICATED GOAT - he'd have some sort of funny costume as well, fishnets and stockings - Lachlan used to do it sometimes as well - and he'd play the chicken with the drumstick - you'd hit the chicken and it makes funny noises .... and you'd have it through pedals and that (LAUGHTER). And people are usually quite disgusted with that. The police turned up a couple of times when I played in Perth and I had to nip out the back door. Another time Brett had an arguement with this guy who was quite offended by it and said it wasn't music. He threatened to stuff the chicken down Brett's shirt, so Brett stuffed it down the guy's pants. And then there was a bit of a scuffle ....

Monroes Fur - 1 Eyed

Monroes Fur featured ex Lubricated Goat members Guy Madison & Peter Hartley and John Murphy ( Max Q, No & SPK) on synth/samples.

Monores Fur later relocated from Sydney to Seattle which according to Guy Madison "..we left Australia with the hope Peter our drummer would come with us with us at some point and he never did. And so we ended up here so Martin (Bland) started playing the drums and Martin lived here in Seattle so there weren’t a lot of conscience decisions of where we were going to be. We did end up here and a lot of it because Martin lived here and we knew some people we knew like Mark Arm and stuff who helped us get some shows and stuff like that and that’s how we ended up here. ..

'1 Eyed' is taken from the CD Sadistfactory which was self released by the band. It can still be purchased from AMAZON.com.

James Baker has been a skin beater for The Scientists, The Victims, Hoodoo Gurus, Beasts of Bourbon and The Dubrovniks. The James Baker Experience was a one off project that released a lone 7" of 'I Can't Control Myself' (The Troggs) / 'Born To Be Punched' (which was also the debut release for John Foy's Red Eye label). The legend goes that James used to perform The Troggs cover during the encores of early Hoodoo Guru shows. The James Baker Experience also featured Roddy Radar (The Johnnys) Stu Spasm (Lubricated Goat) and Tex Perkins (Beasts of Bourbon / Thug). A video was also made for the single which is occasionally played on RAGE (Australian overnight TV music show). According to Tex Perkins the film maker who attempted to make it ran out of funds so the 2nd half of it was filled with token footage of people walking in the streets.

Kim Salmon & The Surrealists - The Surreal Feel

Kim Salmon on Black Eye Records (from email 2003) : "My connection with Black Eye began when I had my band The Surrealists in Perth after the demise of The Scientists in 1987. We quickly formed, did a series of shows round Perth and after which I took the band into a rehearsal room with a borrowed 4 track TEAC reel to reel. I was in a hurry to record it as Brian and Tony the other two members were both leaving town for good. Using the rehearsal room mics I placed round the room I got the band to play some of the material live. I also deliberately got them to play some material that they hadn't heard and recorded that before they got a chance to learn it or even be comfortable with it. This was deliberately Lo-Fi. When I took the tape home I didn't have a mixing desk so I just played it through my stereo and placed a cassette recorder near the speakers. I sent this off to Black Eye as they were the only label I could think of that would consider such a primitive sort of demo. Tex (Perkins) and the guys from Thug heard it and loved it persuading John Foy that it was appropriate for the label. I went into a studio in Sydney when I was in town doing some Beasts of Bourbon shows. Up until this point the record had cost $60 to record. I always say that's what the record cost because its a better story than to mention the mixing and tarting up costs that John (Foy) fronted. The Surrealists continued to make records almost the same way. I'd be in Melbourne or Sydney for one reason or other (I still lived in Perth at this time), we'd organize some dodgey shows, have a rehearsal and get more material together (actually I'd show the other two the songs and they'd play along until it sounded good) and go into a studio and get it down quick. that's how "Just Because You Can't See It" & "Essence" were done. My only other connection with that Black Eye scene was really being one of the founding members of Salamander Jim. I started that with Tex. We just wanted to have a guitar, singer and drummer. After going through, the worlds worst drummer, then Billy Pommer Junior we settled on Richard Ploog. I don't remember the material that well other than it was a kind of minimalist bluesy rockabilly hybrid. The later lineup did record a song of mine from then called Ugly Breakfast...anyway.. I left early to move to UK to take up with The Scientists, and they continued on with a different lineup and went a whole different way...."

The Cover Art story of The Surreal Feel from John Foy Black Eye Records founder: "...That was an actual shoot that was totally born out of the heads of me and Russell Kilbey under the name of Russell Paper then. As part of keeping Black Eye separate from Red Eye Russell being one of the regular photographers for us at that time decided to keep his work Black Eye separate too. Russell did several Black Eye photo shoots for us. It was a great shoot it was particularly amusing because Kim doesn’t like fish and we had to wrap a fish tail in gladwrap and place it in his mouth to achieve some of the effect. So we had to stand there adnursium while we snapped away but it was an actual set up shoot. We did quite a few set up shoots like that and again it was like wearing that hat of art director that the end result was certainly a shared thing. Tex did the font, I did a lot of the cut and paste and Russell’s photography is supreme on that. And it total went with the content of the time of the Blue Velvet there a definite link with that film right down to the run out groove messages. It was just evidence that on certain records that you don’t need a budget, it’s the content powering over any other sort of force and great example of it. It was definitely a large factor over what Black Eye was about; it was all about the content and capturing the moment. There wasn’t time to sit around and analyze it and market it and dress it up think about which demographic it was gonna hit like a conventional record might demand. It was the whole Black Eye thing was very enjoyable for that reason...." This album was later re-issued on CD by In The Red Records and can be bought from Amazon here

Peter Read - Kill Me

While on the subject of Thug .. .Peter Read the main man behind Thug also contributed this track to the Black Eye Records comp 'Leather Donut' which shows him in a more serious tone (given the subject matter) compared to Thug. Peter Read was also the fill-in drummer on the infamous Nude appearance on Blah Blah Blah for Lubricated Goat.

Thug - Dad

Thug were Tex Perkins, Peter Read and Lachlan McLeod and this was their debut 7" called Dad which later became known as "F#%k your Dad". According to John Foy (interview from 2003 for In The Raw project) "... I thought it (Dad) was brilliant. With the background I had in the Red Eye shop sort of noisy terrorist art music I’d been exposed to by Chris Pepperal raw taste in running a record shop I was totally prepared for just about anything, but the coupling together of ‘Dad’ & ‘Thug’ of a seven inch single was horrific it was amazing. It was one of the most incredible singles to exist to this day as far as I was concerned and other people would agree. At the time it came out around July / August of 1987 around then. I know that Fathers Day was on the horizon (Fathers Day falls on a different day in Australian then elsewhere) and so we decided to have an adverting campaign with ‘Make DAD Number 1’. Indeed we had it number one in the alternative charts the week of Fathers Day to add a bit of additional irony and satisfaction to that record...."

Crunt - Snap Out of It

A super group that featured Stu Spasm, Russel Simins from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion & Kat Bjelland from Babes in Toyland. Their sole output was a 7" Swine / Sexy released on Insipid Vinyl and a feature length LP / CD on King Coffee's Trance Syndicate in 1994. The sad thing is that dispite the strength of this CD (see below cover) it's readily available and can be bought for a cent on Amazon.
